Balances Brought Forward

Last modified 07:49, 24 Apr 2017

Overview

This screen should be used to enter opening balance information for portfolios which are new to the system and also to add, or amend, balance information for existing portfolios.

Portfolios

For example, if you are loading a new portfolio on to the system for the period 6.4.10 to 5.4.11 then you need to use this screen to load details of all closing positions held at 5.4.10.

Once you have established the opening balance position for a given portfolio the balances will be updated with current transactions and carried forward automatically from year to year.

If you do not possess details of original acquisition dates and costs then simply load the total number of shares held on to the system leaving the cost fields blank. This will then allow the system to compute all dividends due on the holding together with all capital reorganisations, etc.

If there is subsequently a disposal of such a holding then the system will always produce a question mark within any computation where a cost is missing. The required information can then be researched accordingly on a "need to know" basis.

The screen contains the following fields:

  • Security Code: Enter the Code for the Security in question.
If you are unaware of the Code then this can easily be established by invoking the Security Code Lookup. To do this simply position your cursor within the Security Code field and then either double click or press the F5 key.
  • Acquisition Code or Date: The tranche date is used by the system to keep each parcel of shares separate for identification purposes.

Holding: Enter the total number of shares or stock in the tranche.

Up to four places of decimal are allowed to cater for those Securities, such as Unit Trusts, where dealing takes place in fractions of shares.

For Gilts, Bonds etc. the relevant currency sign will be determined automatically by the system.

Cost: Enter the total cost relevant to the tranche.

Index Date: Enter the month and year when the cost was last indexed.

This would be 03/82 if the holding was acquired prior to March 1982 and there had been no chargeable event, such as a rights issue, since then.

For non-corporate cases the latest Index Date allowable is April 98.

Leave this field blank if indexation does not apply to the period in question or the security.

Indexation: Enter the amount of indexation allowance attached to the B/F cost as at the index date entered above.

Enter 0 (zero) if there have been no chargeable events since acquisition. See also Taking on Balances from Earlier Years.

Newpool Date: Only enter a date in this field if you are entering a Newpool holding that does  not  qualify for the  Tapering Bonus Year as it was first acquired in  the  period March 17 1998 to April 5 1998. In this scenario enter the actual date of acquisition into this field.

Taper Date: Select this button if the holding was acquired via an inter-spouse transfer. In this scenario taper relief should be calculated from the date the transferor spouse originally acquired the shares and not the date of the transfer.

If the total holding was made up of just one acquisition then simply enter the total number of shares and the date they were originally acquired by the transferor spouse.

If the total holding was made up of several acquisitions then a separate record will be needed for each acquisition.

If Taper Relief is due from April 6 1998 and the holding qualifies for the Tapering Bonus Year then enter a Non Standard Taper Date of March 16 1998.

1982 Cost: Enter the March 1982 value relevant to the holding entered above.

1982 Cost Indexation: Enter the amount of indexation allowance attached to the B/F 82 Value as at the index date entered above.

Enter 0 (zero) if there have been no chargeable events since acquisition.

1965 Cost: Enter the April 1965 value relevant to the holding entered above.

1965 Cost Indexation: Enter the amount of indexation allowance attached to the B/F 65 Value as at the index date entered above.

Enter 0 (zero) if there have been no chargeable events since acquisition.
